Scuderia Sour: An Italian Spin on a Classic Cocktail
What is an Italian Grand Prix without a limoncello cocktail? This zesty herbaceous drink is a spin on the classic Amaretto Sour, but replaces Amaretto (an almond liqueur) with Amaro.
Amaro (Italian for “bitter”)
Amaro is most commonly used as an after-dinner digestive, but can make for a uniquely aromatic addition to cocktails. Creating this cocktails gave me a great excuse to try the Wild Cat Amaro from Wild Life Distillery here in Alberta, Canada. Wild Life describes their Amara as the perfect dance between bitter and sweet, and that captures this cocktail perfectly.
Notes: Orange peel, lemon peel, vanilla, mint, wormwood, gentian and cacao.
Bring on the Limoncello
To pair with the Amaro I substituted a traditional triple sec or Cointreau with my Homemade Limoncello. The additional citrus bumped up the zip and, being pretty damn strong, upped the booze-froward flavour that I love in my cocktails. The limoncello also brought added sweetness which is why I recommend adding simple syrup to taste.
This cocktail in the perfect addition to your Italian Grand Prix menu!
